This course introduces students to the fundamental aspects related to the theory, practice, and research in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Some authentic texts will first be exploited to familiarize students with the main differences between general English (GE), and to acquaint them with ESP varieties, units and language. ESL students will then be exposed to the major developments in the field of ESP practice: approaches to teaching ESP, styles and learning skills, register analysis, needs identification, and material selection. Accordingly, participants will be given practice in designing and evaluating  an ESP syllabus specific to a particular group of learners. The course will finally advance to explore the nature of Legal English, English for Journalism and EST. Students are required to identify and qualify the syntactic features of ESP sentences and lexicon.
